Pat Flury, who has ties to the old Carson Capitols summer baseball program, became the newest addition to the University of Nevada baseball coaching staff on Wednesday. Flury, a Reed High School graduate who played for the Ron McNutt-coach Capitols in the early 1990s, will serve as the Wolf Pack's pitching coach. He will fill the volunteer position for the Wolf Pack coaching staff.
"I’m extremely happy we could find such a quality coach to fill the spot as our pitching coach," Nevada head coach Gary Powers told Nevadawolfpack.com. "Pat brings a wealth of knowledge to the staff and along with Chris Pfatenhauer and Buddy Gouldsmith gives an outstanding and experienced coaching staff."
After graduating from Reed in 1991, Flury spent one year at UNLV before moving to the College of Southern Idaho. He was drafted by the Texas Rangers in the 63rd round of Major League Baseball's 1991 free agent draft -- the same year Douglas High's Shawn Estes was taken by Seattle in the first round (Flury and the Reed Raiders bested Estes in the first round of the playoffs that year). Flury chose not to sign and in 1993 was selected in the seventh round by the Kansas City Royals. Flury went on to pitch 12 minor league seasons for the Kansas City, Boston, Cincinnati, Florida, Montreal, New York Yankees and San Diego organizations. His career mark in the minors was 41-28 with 71 saves and a 3.55 ERA. The right-hander set the minor league record with 14 saves in a month in July 1999 for the AA Southern League Chattanooga club (Reds affiliate). That season he was recognized as one of the top minor league relief pitchers earning Rolaids Relief Pitcher of the Year honors. In 2002 he pitched for the Nippon Ham Fighters of the Japan League. His last professional assignment came with AAA Albuquerque in 2005. After closing the book on his professional career, Flury started his own business as a pitching specialist working with clients from around the country. He annually holds pitching clinics for local youth baseball players.
