The Nevada Bighorns summer collegiate baseball team came out of the gate strong but still came out on the short end of a 13-2 score on Friday night in Redding, Calif. The Colt .45s (21-12) scored five runs in the second inning and put the game away with a five-run eighth in the opening game of a weekend series against the Bighorns (11-23) at Tiger Field.
The Bighorns scored twice in the first inning to take a 2-0 lead. Starting pitcher Eric Maupin singled to lead off the game, advanced to second on a Phil Sacks sacrifice bunt and scored when Jonathan Sigado homered.
Redding scored once in the home half of the first inning and took a lead it never relinquished in the second. The big hit in the rally was a two-run single by Cody Grice with two outs. The Colt .45s extended their lead to 8-2 in the fifth inning on Andrew Lassen's two-run homer. Lassen, a U.C. Davis product, added an RBI single in the eighth to finish the night 3-for-4 with three RBI. Garret Yatch went 4-for-5 with a double, triple and two RBI to lead Redding's 16-hit attack. Cory Rademacher pitched six innings of four-hit ball, allowing two runs to go with five strikeouts and no walks (he hit one batter), to earn credit for the win. Zach Durr worked the final three innings to earn credit for a save. Maupin pitched seven innings for the Bighorns, allowed eight runs on 12 hits, struck out two and walked one. The Bighorns finished with six hits, led by Anthony Stolo's 2-for-3 with a double. Jeff Young and Chris Houle also contributed hits for the Bighorns. The two teams resume their series Saturday with a 7 p.m. contest in Redding and wrap up the series with a 6 p.m. game on Sunday.
