Joey Webb turned in a stellar performance on the mound, but it wasn't enough to prevent the Nevada Bighorns summer collegiate baseball team from falling to a 4-0 defeat against the Redding Colt .45s on Saturday night in Redding, Calif.
Webb, a 6-foot-4 left-hander from Damonte Ranch High and Feather River College, pitched all eight innings and struck out 10 batters along the way in a game that saw the Bighorns (11-24) give up four early runs against the Colt .45s (22-12) the middle game of a three-game weekend series at Tiger Field.
Shane Cadaret pitched eight shutout innings, allowed four hits, struck out seven and walked two to pick up the win. Tanner McIntyre retired the side in order in the ninth, striking out two of the three batters he faced. The Bighorns threatened in the fifth inning when Matt Winter and Adam Miller hit back-to-back singles with one out. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch, but both were left stranded as Cadaret retired the side on a strikeout and ground out. Miller went 2-for-3 in the game and Eric Maupin doubled in the eighth inning for the Bighorns. Redding took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on Tyler Berger's two-out RBI single. The Colt .45s loaded the bases with one out in the third and came away with two runs, both scoring on wild pitches. Webb avoided further damage by striking out Redding's No. 4 and 5 hitters to end the inning. Aarason Perry hit a solo home run in the fourth to give the Colt .45s a 4-0 lead. Webb allowed seven hits and seven walks on the night. The two teams resume their series Sunday night with a 6 p.m. contest.
